Ethylene gas that comes from fruit naturally can ripen other nearby fruit. You can easily find more information about this online.This bowl/basket is not too high and allows for ventilation. I have an entire bag of oranges and lemons sitting in this bowl right now and a few days ago some heirloom tomatoes that were still uncut. If you are looking for a smaller bowl check the measurements before you order because this is not a small item, nor is it huge. It does allow ventilation and you can see which fruits you might want to eat first without having to dig around like a traditional bowl. This bowl is only as boring as the items you put in it.
